NEW YORK, CALIFORNIA, SPAIN, MAURITIUS: no matter the city, country or context, it seems most coastal locales have a “long beach.” In Cuba’s case, Playa Larga is something of a misnomer since the beach is small and the mud-colored sand rather a disappointment if you’ve been to any of the powdery white beauties typical of the north coast. On the upside, at least there is sand; much of Cuba’s southern coast is lined with an ankle-twisting, biting kind of rock known as diente de perro (dog’s tooth) more hospitable to hermit crabs than humans; the exception is Playa Ancón, very close to Trinidad (see Chapter 32), which boasts soft, white sand complemented by a verdant mountain backdrop. While not the most attractive beach destination in the classic sense, Playa Larga offers terrific scuba diving and birding, with some of Cuba’s best fly-fishing grounds in nearby Ciénaga de Zapata (see Chapter 53). Playa Larga also holds an important place in Cuban, nay the hemisphere’s history, since it’s perched on the northern bend of the infamous Bahía de Cochinos.
